Nobody warns you about this when you buy a PS5. You spend the money on the console, pick up one or two big titles, and then one evening you wander into the free section of the PlayStation Store out of curiosity.
Six months later, you’ve somehow racked up 300 hours in games that cost you nothing at all.
The free side of the PS5 library gets less credit than it deserves. These aren’t stripped-down demos or lazy mobile ports.
Several of them have proper budgets behind them, years of updates, and communities that are still growing. A couple of them will quietly eat your entire year if you let them.
One thing to clear up first, because it trips people up. “Free” on PlayStation means two different things.
There are free PS5 games, which cost nothing to download and nothing to play, and make their money through optional cosmetics.
Then there’s the monthly PS Plus lineup, which is only free if you’re already paying for a subscription, and which disappears the moment you stop paying.
Everything below belongs to the first group. Download it, play it, keep it. No subscription, no expiry date, no PS Plus needed, even for the online modes.
#1 Fortnite

You already know what Fortnite is. That’s not the reason it’s sitting at number one. The reason is that the game you remember from 2018 and the game that exists today are barely related.
Yes, the original Battle Royale is still around 100 players, one island, and the last one standing wins. But over the years, Epic has added several other games. LEGO Fortnite is a survival-crafting mode with a lot of depth.
Fortnite Festival is a rhythm game where you can headline virtual concerts. And the creative mode is a bottomless pit of player-made maps, ranging from parkour courses to full horror experiences to things that defy description.
On PS5, it runs beautifully. Short load times, high frame rates, and the DualSense haptics give the shooting a bit more punch than you’d expect from a game that looks this cartoonish.
If your TV supports 120Hz, enabling Performance Mode would be beneficial.
#2 Genshin Impact

It is genuinely strange that this game costs nothing. We keep waiting for someone to notice and put a price on it.
The open world of Teyvat is one of the best-looking places you can wander around on a PS5, and the volumetric clouds are exclusive to the PlayStation version.
The soundtrack is excellent.
The combat has real depth once elemental reactions start clicking. All seven regions, the entire main story, and every seasonal event are free to play through.
You control a Traveler exploring a fantasy world, building a party out of characters with different elemental abilities, and slowly unravelling whatever is going on with the gods and the abyss.
On PS5, the load times are dramatically shorter than they were on PS4, which matters more than it sounds when you’re teleporting around the map constantly.
For everyone else, it’s hundreds of hours of high-quality RPG for nothing.
#3 Warframe

Warframe has been around since 2013 and has only improved over time. You play as a ‘Tenno,’ a warrior who controls a bio-metal suit known as a ‘Warframe.’
You are dropped into a solar system teeming with various factions, where you must battle them and gather loot. The game blends shooting, stealth, RPG progression, and spaceship combat; it might sound like an odd mix, but in practice, it works remarkably well.
The PS5 version runs at a smooth 60 FPS with 4K support, and thanks to the haptics, the feel of different weapons and abilities in your hands is truly distinct and unique.
This is the best use of the controller we have ever seen in a free-to-play game.
#4 Apex Legends

If you want a competitive shooter that feels like a full-price game but costs nothing, this is the one.
Squads of three drop onto a map, scavenge for gear, and fight to be the last team alive.
What separates Apex from the pile of other battle royales is the movement. Sliding, climbing, zip-lining, and hero abilities that give each character an actual role instead of just a different outfit.
It’s fast, it’s tactical, and the skill ceiling is somewhere near the clouds.
The PS5 version supports 4K and 60 FPS, and the adaptive triggers add a nice bit of resistance depending on which weapon you’re holding. Best of all, you don’t need PS Plus to play online.
#5 Rocket League

- Developer: Psyonix
- Cost: Free, with cosmetic-only purchases
Rocket League sounds stupid when you describe it out loud. You drive a car. You hit a giant ball. You try to score goals. That’s it.
Then you play it, and suddenly it’s 2 am and you’re watching a YouTube tutorial on aerial dribbling and wondering where your evening went.
It became free-to-play in 2020 and runs very smoothly at up to 120 FPS on the PS5. Matches last five minutes, making it perfect for both short sessions and competitive gaming marathons lasting up to four hours.
It also supports cross-platform play, so it is very easy to play with friends on PC or Xbox.
A Quick Word on PS Plus Monthly Games
If you do pay for PlayStation Plus, you get a rotating set of games each month at no extra cost.
September 2026 brings Sniper Elite: Resistance, MLB The Show 26, Wobbly Life, and Chained Echoes, which is a nicely varied batch covering stealth-action, sports, sandbox co-op, and retro-style RPG.
Just remember those aren’t yours. Let your subscription lapse, and they lock up again. Everything on the list above works differently. It stays yours regardless.
Final Thoughts
The PS5’s free library is quietly one of its best features. Fortnite gives you about six games in one. Genshin Impact hands you a full-scale RPG for nothing.
Warframe is a thousand-hour looter shooter that respects your wallet. Apex Legends goes toe to toe with paid shooters. And Rocket League will absolutely ruin your sleep schedule if you’re not careful.
None of them need PS Plus for online play, either. Sony carved out that exception years ago, and it means these games are actually free rather than free-with-an-asterisk.
Pick one. Download it. See where it takes you. Worst case, you’ve lost some free time.
