Football games have gotten weird lately, and that’s a compliment.
A few years back, you had two choices: FIFA or Madden, and that was your lot.
Now there’s a free-to-play title with a billion downloads, a third-person 5v5 game that plays nothing like a simulation, and a car soccer game that refuses to go away.
To save you the guesswork, we’ve compiled a list of five excellent football video games you can play right now.
We’ve selected titles that are fun to play, offer plenty of depth, and respect your time as a sports game fan. No filler titles or games designed solely to sell card packs.
Just the best video games that deliver a truly excellent experience.
Let’s dive in.
#1 EA Sports FC 26
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Switch, Amazon Luna
Naturally, that is the most important point. For anyone seeking an authentic simulation, EA’s soccer series remains the top choice.
And this year’s version finally addresses a long-standing complaint: the game could never quite decide whether to be realistic or arcade-style.
So now it just lets you choose.
Authentic mode slows the ball down, gives passes more weight, and turns Career Mode into something that feels like a Sunday afternoon match.
Competitive mode tightens everything up for Ultimate Team and Clubs. Two different games under one roof, which sounds like a marketing line until you actually play both and notice how differently matches unfold.
The licensing remains absurd in the best way.
Premier League, Bundesliga, LaLiga, Champions League, Libertadores over 20,000 players across 750-plus clubs and national teams. If it’s a competition you care about, it’s probably in here somewhere.
In Ultimate Team, you are still nudged to spend money in ways that quickly become tedious. The real fun lies in Career Mode and Clubs, and neither of these asks you to spend money.
#2 Madden NFL 26
Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
Let’s be fair about Madden, too.
It’s been a rough few years for the series. Remember when Franchise mode remained virtually untouched for an entire console generation?
Yeah.
But this one is different.
The passing game finally feels responsive.
Receivers run routes that make sense. The AI stopped doing that thing where it blocks its own ball carrier into a pile of linemen.
There’s a new QB DNA system too, and it isn’t just a bullet point on the back of the box. Mahomes genuinely feels different from Burrow, and you notice it in how quickly each gets rid of the ball.
Franchise mode got the real love, though. It plays like a sports RPG now, with progression that spans multiple seasons and decisions that come back to bite you later.
Wear and Tear adds fatigue and injury accumulation, so feeding your running back 30 carries in a game will cost you by December.
#3 eFootball
Platforms: PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Mobile, Switch 2
Free. Actually free, not “free until you feel bad about skipping the battle pass” free.
And it’s crossed a billion downloads, which is a number that’s genuinely hard to wrap your head around.
Its ‘feel’ is its greatest strength.
You can sense the weight of the ball. Dribbling requires genuine input; you can’t simply hold down the sprint button and expect good results.
If you have ever played ‘Pro Evolution Soccer,’ you will recognize that same DNA here, and it will likely win you over after just a couple of matches.
One drawback is that it has fewer licenses compared to EA.
You will find teams from England, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and a few other countries, but many major clubs will appear under fake names.
If you want every kit and badge to be authentic, this might bother you; however, if you want to play good football, it won’t matter.
The Switch 2 version, eFootball Kick-Off!, is worth mentioning, too far better than the mess Konami shipped back in 2021.
#4 Rematch
Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
This stands out from the rest and is perhaps our favorite item on this list. You don’t control the entire team here; in a 5v5 match, you control just one player, with the camera positioned behind your back, and every touch is manual.
Think Rocket League with a human instead of a car. No auto-aim, no assists. Misjudge a pass, and the ball goes the other way while you’re sprinting back, watching them counter.
Solo queue is rough.
Random teammates don’t pass, everyone wants to be the hero, and you’ll lose matches you should have won.
Get three or four friends in a party with headsets, though, and it turns into something else entirely.
The first time you string together a proper one-touch move and finish it, you’ll understand.
It’s not a simulation, and it isn’t trying to be. If you want formations and tactics, look elsewhere. If you want chaos and pure skill expression, this is your pick.
#5 Rocket League
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Switch
Rocket League has been out for over a decade, and people keep coming back to play it; that speaks volumes far more than any review could.
Season 24 refreshed the competitive structure and added more customization options.
Psyonix has confirmed a move to Unreal Engine 6 down the road, so it should stay looking sharp.
But none of that is why people play.
People play because hitting a perfect aerial shot at full speed, with a car, is one of the most satisfying things in gaming.
The skill ceiling is basically infinite. You’ll be decent in ten hours and still learning new mechanics at five hundred. It’s free, cosmetics are genuinely optional, and there’s no pay-to-win nonsense muddying things up.
If you haven’t tried it yet, you definitely should. It goes well with almost everything.
So, Which One Should You Play?
It depends on what you want.
Want the most realistic soccer on the market?
EA Sports FC 26: play Career Mode on Authentic.
Want American football with a franchise mode that respects your time? Madden NFL 26.
Want to spend nothing and still compete online? eFootball.
Want something that feels genuinely new? Rematch.
Want a game you’ll still be playing five years from now? Rocket League.
Most people switch between two or three of these options depending on their mood. There is no rule stating that you have to choose just one.
Pick up the controller. The season has already started.
